Hi, I’m having trouble on picking the right dog food for my dog. So I decided on letting her pick for herself, especially since she’s the one who’s gonna have to eat it anyways. I’ve limited my choices to four brands; Blue Buffalo, Halo, Natural Balance, and By Nature. My Chihuahua mix is currently on "By Nature" puppy formula but after reading dog food reviews, By Nature wasn’t one of the top dog foods. In your opinion what should I stick with, that would be most beneficial for my little dog. Also, I have samples of each dog food (previously mentioned), how would I have her sample each dog food without upsetting her stomach and how do I know what she likes best? Thanks.

I have a 6 or 7 year old Chihuahua. It was my mother’s dog and I took it in when mom passed away several months. My mom didn’t feed it dog food, just human foods from the meals she prepared for herself. The little dog begs at the table and it will eat almost anything if it has some chopped up meat in it and it will even eat green beans, peas, and carrots if it has a little beef, chicken or pork chopped up in it. Although she is not over-weight and the table foods she eats seems to agree with her digestive system, it can’t be healthy or measure up to a dog’s healthiest nutrition needs. I been struggling to find a nutritionally balanced commercial dog food it will eat but have not had any success. So far I have tried Kibbles ‘n Bits, Purina Kibbles and Chunks, Purina ONE beef small bites, Purina Pro Plan small breed formula, and Eukanuba Adult small bites. She won’t eat them. I have withheld table foods for as long as 3 days at a time while trying to get her to eat a nutritionally balanced commercial dog and have tried to mix table food with the commercial dog food. She won’t touch it. She will pick some of the table food out of it and then walk away from the rest of the dog food. I can give her some peas and carrots mixed with chicken and gravy and she gobbles it down and I can give her mashed potatoes mixed with chopped pork roast and gravy and she will gobble that down, stuff like that and almost anything from the table mixed with any kind of meat, especially hamburger meat, and she will gobble it down but she won’t touch dog food. What commercial dog food do you feed your Chihuahua?
We have a PetSmart and a Petco nearby. The PetSmart is closest and that is where I been browsing the dog foods looking for something she might eat. I hope to find a bagged dry or semi-moist kibbles type she will eat.
